Description:
Hanuut are known for their reputation as being among the Galaxy's most ideal slaves. Natives of an unremarkable moon in the Ho'atii system, near the Coreward boundary of the Outer Rim Territories, the Hanuut are a placid, robust people who have been servants or slaves to various masters for several Millennia. Technologically undeveloped, the Hanuut were first discovered by planetary surveyors in the early days of the Republic who identified an ideal environment for the propagation of several species of Corellian broad-spored blue mosses in their world's climate. These particular varieties were expensive delicacies, difficult to grow on Corellia due to climate change.

This initial interest in the Hanuut moon's agricultural potential quickly grew to include plans for the development of the planetoid's native population, the Hanuut themselves. The Hanuut were strong for their size, and able to function under a considerable burden. The early off world colonists used them as laborers in their operations in exchange for developing the Hanuut culture into the Galactic Age, bringing the advantages of modern medicine, hygiene and technology to this low-tech people for the first time.

Though in the beginning, many Hanuut were employed fairly and without exploitation, over the many ages that followed they eventually became an indentured slave-race, governed by a resident conglomeration of powerful companies that made the Hanuut moon their bases of operation. Although never the subjects of any direct genetic manipulation, generations of slavery have bred out any rebellious streaks in the Hanuut psyche, leaving them the quiet, hard working race they are today, unquestioning of their place in Galactic society.

Personality:
Hanuut are a quiet race, lacking the physiology to communicate vocally in anything but husky coughs. This quietness also pervades their personalities. Most Hanuut are meek and unquestioning of authority. They are accepting of circumstance and diligent in their tasks. Hanuut are loyal to their employers and family, a hangover from the days of close-knit tribal existence.

Deep in the mountainous regions of the Hanuut moon, wild Hanuut do still live in small numbers. These wild tribes conform to the same temperamental profiles as their domesticated kin, although some exhibit more independently spirited personalities. Even so, such Hanuut could never be described by an offworlder as rebellious or self-indulgent. Such traits are simply alien to their nature, slave or otherwise, which emphasizes the good of the community above the rights or comforts of an individual. It is these traits that have made them so amenable to exploitation in their history.

Physical Description:
Short by most standards, Hanuut are a well-muscled, gray-skinned race of humanoids with low-browed heads and large, bulging pink eyes, specially adapted to the low light conditions of their homeworld. Hanuut lack vocal chords, so they have developed a variety of regional sign languages, augmented by hisses and whistles. Skin coloration varies very little, being a basic slate gray, and all Hanuut, female or male, are completely hairless.

Special Abilities:
Low Light Vision: No penalties for perception checks at night or underwater.
Incredible Fortitude and Stamina: Hanuut endure harsh climate conditions and work almost constantly. They have a natural +1D armor against physical attacks, and +2D to all stamina checks.

Special Skills:
Body Language Interpretation and Sign Language (a Perception Skill): Time to use: One Round. The Hanuut have long relied on non-verbal communication and can judge a person's character based on body language and emotional states. Those who mask their emotions may have something else to hide, and should be trusted with caution.

Story Factors:
Primitive: Unless a player has a good explanation as to why their Hanuut character has modern technological skills, they will start out only with very limited Dexterity, Technical and Mechanical skills.
Example Names: Hanuut bear sign-names derived from their tribal affiliation. Some literally translated are Riverboy of Deep-Pool Tribe, Darkskin of Plains People, Stonehand of the Carving Folk. Many also have alien names given to them by their masters, and these vary widely depending on the species of origin.
Adventurers: Hanuut adventurers are very rare, most being simple commoners or if trained for specific tasks, experts in a given field of work. Occasionally, through unusual circumstances, Hanuut can find themselves masterless or free. Without a clear purpose, these individuals tend to fall in with surrogate family groups, to which they become emotionally bonded. Such adventuring Hanuut are almost always Fringers or Technicians. Hanuut are occasionally born force sensitive, but no Hanuut Jedi are known.
